Electronic miscellaneous document (EMD)

Electronic miscellaneous document (EMD) is an IATA standard for electronically recording and processing ancillary revenue transactions between airlines and passengers, covering all ancillary services beyond the base fare

An EMD includes fees for baggage, seat upgrades, lounge access, in-flight meals, and penalty fees for changes or cancelations.

The EMD is stored electronically in the airline’s system, allowing for financial tracking and future modifications. When a passenger or travel agent purchases an ancillary service, the airline’s system generates an EMD linked to the passenger’s PNR.

For example, a traveler purchases an additional checked bag online. An EMD is issued for the extra baggage fee and linked to the booking. At the airport, the traveler presents their booking reference, and the airline verifies the EMD before accepting the baggage.

ONE Order is an IATA initiative designed to simplify airline reservation, delivery, and accounting systems. The goal is to merge multiple records (PNRs, e-tickets, and EMDs) in a single, unified document.
