Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is an automated system used by the US government to determine the eligibility of visitors from Visa Waiver Program (VWP) regions (many European countries, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and others) to travel to the US without obtaining a visa.

Travelers must apply for ESTA online and receive approval before boarding a flight or ship to the US. This process involves filling out a form with personal and travel information and answering questions related to eligibility. The system then assesses whether the traveler meets the requirements for entry under the VWP.

By screening travelers in advance, ESTA helps identify individuals who may pose a security risk or do not meet the VWP requirements, thus enhancing border security.
