Point of sale (POS)

A point of sale (POS) system is a combination of hardware and software that retailers, restaurants, hotels, and other businesses use to complete sales transactions.

The hardware typically includes a computer or tablet, a cash register, barcode scanners, receipt printers, and payment terminals (card readers). The software side processes payments and can have advanced functionalities like tracking inventory and managing customer data.

In travel, POS systems handle transactions at hotel front desks, airline check-in counters, car rental agencies, etc. For example, hotel POS systems collect orders from various service points, such as restaurants, spas, and bars. These charges are automatically added to the guest’s bill throughout their stay and allow for a seamless final payment during check-out.
