Unaccompanied minor
An unaccompanied minor is a child traveling without a parent or guardian. In such cases, airlines and other transportation providers ensure the safety of unaccompanied minors from check-in and layovers (if any) till the authorized guardian receives them on arrival.
Airlines have specific policies and fees regarding unaccompanied minors, which vary by carrier.
- Many airlines require children between 5 and 14 years old to use their unaccompanied minor service;
- Airlines charge a fee for unaccompanied minor services. The final charge depends on the carrier and route;
- Guardians must complete the necessary documentation and provide the names, contact details, and IDs of the persons dropping off and picking up the child before they can travel;
- The unaccompanied minor is often seated near the flight crew for easier monitoring; and
- Airlines prefer direct flights when handling unaccompanied minors and have restrictions on last-minute flights and red-eye flights.
Travel agents and travel management companies (TMCs) often assist families in arranging travel for unaccompanied minors, ensuring compliance with airline regulations.
