Your desired reach, meaning the number of connections it has to distribute your rooms at. For example, the most popular CM Siteminder has 350 channels, and TravelClick (according to its website) will connect you to 400 OTAs. Not bad at all.
Next, what niche of channels does it connect to? Do you want to be listed on the biggest websites or specialty ones? Dig through their <a href="https://www.travelclick.com/solutions/reservations-and-booking-engine/connections/">list of connections</a> to make sure it works for you.
Also, of course, the price you’re willing to pay. CMs usually have you pay a service fee per month plus the percentage of revenue from each channel or fee per each booking. Usually, the monthly fee will be below $100, but it greatly depends on the number of rooms you have. TravelClick doesn’t have the pricing listed on the website, but if you contact them directly and describe your situation, they should give you that info. So, <a href="https://developers.amadeus.com/pricing">Amadeus</a> suggests 2,000 free requests per month for low-fare search and 3,000 requests for a regular search, given that you use their self-service APIs. Sabre doesn&rsquo;t have fixed rates and everything must be discussed individually.
As for other players, Skyscanner claims to provide all API services for free, if you can negotiate commercial partnership with them. Their limit is up to 100 requests per minute for live prices. You are right that Kiwi doesn&rsquo;t provide open info on their rates, so it&rsquo;s worth contacting them directly. The same for Travelfusion, Orbitz, and Priceline.
You can also try your luck with ATPCO, that&rsquo;s where all flight prices come from.

Its been some time since I last contacted you and hopefully you can help again. 
We have developed software to access hotel data from the the larger OTA API's (and some GDSs) but understandably (in hindsight!) these systems are rate limited to prevent excessive loads on them (limiting the number of API calls a provider can make per minute before the API returns HTTP/1.1 429 Too Many Requests). This means mining for rates for length of stays is impracticle. Do you have any suggestions or ideas on overcoming this limitation other than perhaps integrating closer to the source of this hotel data (like with the RMS - not sure if this is possible or the implications?).

If an hotel is using a particular channel manager and they want to connect to say Expedia then when they configure Expedia (having got a partnership agreed) then does the hotel 'simply' select from within the Expedia setup the relevant channel manager product and they're on line through that OTA? 
If the channel manager connects to multiple OTAs then can I assume the channel manager product has either supported the OTAs API 'for channel management' or less likely in terms of the larger OTA's the OTA has supported the channel manager own API? 
Sorry if this is incorrect but in a nutshell I'm trying to understand the pieces and the integrations.

Are there products connecting to channel managers to source data for mining and analysis rather than distribution of rates?

Booking.com, as well as most major OTAs, has its own web interface, an <a href="https://join.booking.com/how_to_join.html?label=gog235jc-1BCAEoggI46AdIM1gDaOkBiAEBmAEJuAEXyAEM2AEB6AEBiAIBqAIDuAKRjtLlBcACAQ&amp;aid=397594">extranet</a>. Basically, the extranet is a dashboard for managing a property. There you can add photos of your property, provide rates, define policies, configure payments, etc.
But there’s a problem with using an extranet. If you want to list your property at multiple OTAs like Booking.com, Airbnb, Expedia, and more, you have to manually update room availability in each separate extranet belonging to different OTAs.
That’s why some hotels -  those that want to distribute their properties via many channels at once - <a href="https://www.altexsoft.com/blog/engineering/hotel-channel-managers-key-providers-and-how-to-choose-a-channel-manager/">use channel managers</a>. These systems have their own dashboards and automatically update room availability and property details across all connected OTAs. So, hotel owners can operate using channel manager software only.
But since there are many small property owners that are fine with managing their rooms manually in a handful of OTAs, they stick with extranets. It’s likely that the majority of hoteliers listing their properties at Booking.com are doing so.

I read (hopefully correctly) that you need to go through a channel manager to connect to booking.com but when I looked at the hotel base of a popular channel managers (e.g. Siteminder 30,000 properties and who also connect to booking.com) I'm struggling to understand how the rest of Booking.com's hotels connect. Any help / advise would be very much appreciated. 30,000 is a small number compared with the number of hotels advertised on booking.com. Please excuse my naivety as I'm new to this.

Kayak has an <a href="https://www.kayak.com/affiliates">affiliate program</a> that you must enroll in before integrating their API. Keep in mind that Kayak doesn’t permit integration unless your platform has more than 100,000 monthly visitors.
If you have more, you can use their API or white label. To proceed you have to define which kinds of search data you want to receive and contact them directly.
If you have fewer than 100,000 monthly visitors, Kayak offers an affiliate programs trial using third party affiliate networks like CJ or Webgains. They will connect you with smaller brands belonging to Booking Holdings, like Momondo.
